When is a home charger most useful?
Think about a normal week. Where does the car spend several hours parked? How often do you need to charge, and can workplace or public charging already meet that need? A charger at home is useful when it fits those routines, rather than simply because you own an EV.
- Regular home charging: being able to plug in where you park can reduce separate charging trips.
- A suitable electricity tariff: compare the home unit rate with the charging you would otherwise buy.
- A clear parking arrangement: check access, permissions and a practical cable route before choosing equipment.
- Plans for another EV: mention future needs so the electrical capacity and possible load management can be assessed.
When might it be less compelling?
If you drive very little, already have inexpensive workplace charging or expect to move shortly, the financial case may be weaker. A difficult cable route or groundworks can also raise the installation cost. Convenience may still matter to you, but it should be separated from the financial calculation.
Do not assume a charger increases the sale price of your house. We cannot promise a valuation uplift or a faster sale, and neither should be needed to justify the quote.
Compare your costs, not a national saving figure
Estimate how much charging you would move from public or workplace chargers to home. Multiply that electricity by the difference between the relevant unit prices, then account for any change to your household tariff or standing charge. Compare the resulting annual saving with the full installation cost.

A smart charger can help you schedule charging, but cheap overnight rates are not universal. Confirm the tariff is available at your Northern Ireland address and compare the whole electricity bill.
Choose power and features around the car
The Energy Saving Trust explains that charging time depends on the chargepoint, vehicle charging capability and battery size. A higher-rated charger cannot make the car accept more power than its onboard system allows.
Ask about cable reach, app controls, connectivity, warranty and compatibility with any solar or battery plans. Follow the vehicle manufacturer’s charge-limit and battery-care guidance rather than assuming home charging guarantees a longer battery life.
Can a grant help?
Eligible renters and flat owners may receive help through the EV chargepoint grant: 75% of qualifying costs, up to £500. Eligibility is specific, so check it before booking. Do not deduct a grant from your budget until you know the application requirements are met.
What should the quote make clear?
It should identify the charger, installation scope, any electrical upgrades, VAT and exclusions. Agree the parking position and cable route. Ask about testing, commissioning and support after installation. Those details make quotes comparable and help avoid surprises.
