Is a home battery worth it without solar panels?

Yes — and it's a more common question than it used to be

A home battery doesn't need solar panels to be useful. On its own it does two things: it buys electricity when it's cheap and gives it back when it's dear, and it keeps your house running when the street goes dark. Whether that pays depends almost entirely on your tariff and your usage, so here is how to tell without a salesman.

How a battery makes money with no panels

The mechanism is simple arbitrage. On a time-of-use tariff, overnight units cost a fraction of peak units. A battery charges in the cheap window and runs the house through the expensive part of the day, so you buy the same electricity at the lower price. No generation involved.

What decides whether it's worth doing:

  • The gap between your cheap and standard rates. This is the whole return. A wide gap pays; a flat single rate pays nothing at all.
  • How much you use in the expensive hours. A household that's out all day and cooks, washes and heats water in the evening is the good case.
  • Battery size versus daily usage. A battery that's empty by 7pm has stopped saving you anything.

If you're on a flat-rate tariff with no cheap window, a battery on its own has almost nothing to work with. That's the honest test: no rate difference, no saving.

The other reason people fit one: staying on

Money aside, a battery is the only practical way to ride out a power cut without a generator. Configured for backup, it carries the circuits you choose — freezer, router, lights, heating controls — and switches over fast enough that you generally don't notice. If you already have solar, adding a battery is a different sum

Retrofitting a battery to an existing array is usually a better case than a battery alone, because it has two jobs instead of one: it soaks up the daytime surplus you're currently exporting at 9.64p and it can still charge on a cheap overnight rate. We retrofit either by AC-coupling alongside your existing inverter or by swapping to a hybrid inverter; the survey decides which makes sense.

Cost and VAT

Batteries are priced on capacity and install complexity, so we quote after the survey rather than from a list. Two facts worth knowing: standalone batteries have qualified for 0% VAT since 1 February 2024, and that zero rate runs until 31 March 2027, after which it is due to return to 5%. If solar is likely later, say so — we'll fit a battery that can take panels without a rebuild.
