A modern fuse board. The foundation of a safe house.
If your consumer unit is a row of rewirable fuses or an old board without RCD protection, it's working to standards written decades ago. We replace it with a modern unit — RCBO-protected, surge-protected, tested and certified.

Why upgrade
Protection that didn't exist when your board was fitted.
Every new consumer unit we fit uses RCBO protective devices — each circuit gets its own combined protection against electric shock and overload, so one fault trips one circuit instead of blacking out half the house. We add surge protective devices in line with the 18th edition wiring regulations, guarding your electronics against damaging spikes. And we only fit brands we've seen perform over years, not whatever's cheapest that week.
- RCBO on every circuit — shock and overload protection without nuisance tripping.
- Surge protection included — 18th edition SPDs protecting your appliances and electronics.
- Select, proven brands — performance-tested kit we'd fit in our own homes.
- Certified handover — tested to BS 7671 with certification in your inbox.
What you get
Signs your board is due.
Rewirable fuses or no RCD
Fuse wire and unprotected circuits belong to another era. If your board has either, an upgrade is overdue.
Planning solar, a battery or an EV charger
New systems deserve a sound foundation — many of our energy installs start with a board upgrade the same day.
Tripping, buzzing or heat
A board that trips constantly, buzzes or shows scorch marks is telling you something. Have it looked at before it decides for you.
When to change it
Four signs your board is past it.
No RCD protection
If a test button is nowhere to be found, the board predates the protection that's saved lives for two decades. An RCD disconnects in milliseconds when current leaks — old boards just let it leak.
Old wire fuses
Fuse carriers you mend with a strip of wire went out with the analogue telly. They're slow to disconnect, easy to over-rate, and a reliable sign the whole installation deserves inspection.
A wooden backboard
Boards mounted on painted timber, often beside the meter, date from an era with very different rules. Modern metal-clad units contain faults instead of feeding them.
No room for what's next
Solar, a battery, an EV charger, a heat pump — each needs ways in the board. If yours is full, the upgrade happens either way; better to do it once, planned, than twice in a panic.
Done properly
A day's work. A generation of protection.
A consumer unit replacement is a full morning-to-afternoon job done right: every circuit tested before and after, dual-RCD or RCBO protection per circuit, surge protection as standard, and clear labelling — including dual-supply warning labels where solar or a battery feeds the installation, exactly as the regulations demand. You get a full Electrical Installation Certificate, not a receipt.
- 18th Edition metal consumer unit, RCBO or dual-RCD design
- Surge protection (SPD) fitted as standard
- Solar, battery and EV supplies integrated and labelled correctly
- Full test results and certification issued on completion
Straight answers
Fuse board questions, answered honestly.
How long does a consumer unit replacement take?
Most straightforward replacements are done in a day, with the power off for only part of it. We test every circuit as part of the change and certify the work before we leave.
What's an RCBO and why does it matter?
An RCBO combines shock protection and overload protection in one device, fitted per circuit. A fault on the shower circuit trips the shower circuit — not the freezer, the Wi-Fi and everything else.
Do I need a new board before solar or an EV charger?
Not always — but older boards often lack the space or protection new circuits need. We check at survey and tell you straight; when it is needed, doing both together saves a second visit.
